What is a penpal?
A penpal is someone with whom you correspond with on a regular basis. This person is generally located in another country, or somewhere far away from your current location. Nowadays, the most common method of communication between penpals is done via e-mail.
Why should I have a penpal?
There are many reasons why you may want to have a penpal. Some of these reasons include:
- To learn another language
- To learn about another culture
- To exchange thoughts or ideas about a common interest or hobby
Can you give me any tips on finding a penpal?
Yes! There are many things you should do in order to find someone who you will get along with.
If you would like people to find you…
- Don’t leave your "About me" section blank.
- Be as detailed as possible when you describe yourself, your hobbies, etc.
- If you are particular about whom you wish to correspond with then clearly state what you are looking for in a penpal.
- Make a note about how often you’d like to correspond with your penpal (ie. Weekly, monthly, etc.)
- Posting a picture is recommended if you feel it appropriate (make sure it is appropriate for all audiences)

- Carefully read the "About me" section of a potential penpal.
- Note what they are / are not looking for in a penpal.
I’m receiving emails from people promising me money for helping them move their millions of dollars. What’s the deal with that?
This type of scam has become increasingly more people in recent years. A particularly popular scam, called the "Nigeran scam", preys on the trust of people in order to lure them out of thousands of dollars. You should discard these emails upon receiving them, should they happen to make their way to your e-mail inbox.
Should I disclose my home address in the "About me" section?
We do not recommend doing this, as it could be seen by any registered or unregistered member. It’s is preferable to build up a level of trust between your penpal before you divulge such information. You are by no means required to share this information.
